Barbiturate protection from cerebral infarction in primates.

چکیده
Barbiturate Protection From Cerebral Infarction in Primates • Baboons were anesthetized with halothane or pentobarbital prior to middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion to test the protective effect of barbiturates against stroke in primates. Significantly less infarction was found in animals that received 90 mg per kilogram pentobarbital or more than occurred in control animals. Because of cardiovascular and ventilatory complications at high doses of barbiturate, however, therapeutic trials to suppress stroke in the human must await further identification of an effective regimen which includes a safe barbiturate dose. ! Barbiturate Protection in Acute Focal Cerebral Ischemia • We have found that anesthetic technique modifies the neurological and pathological se-quelae of unilateral middle cerebral artery and internal carotid artery occlusion in dogs. Occlu-sion was performed in seven groups of six dogs during each of the following anesthetic regimens: light (0.8%) halothane, "awake," deep (1.9%) halothane, d...
متن کاملDose dependency of the post-insult protective effect of pentobarbital in the canine experimental stroke model.
In a canine stroke model, dose dependent protection by postocclusion pentobarbital was suggested from 10--40 mg/kg. In 28 dogs investigated (10 from a previous study) a distinct, significant reduction in right cerebral hemisphere infarction occurred in animals given 15--20 mg/kg pentobarbital intramuscularly 1 hour postocclusion. Increased dosages did not alter statistically the infarct size an...
متن کاملPentobarbital protection from cerebral infarction without suppression of edema.
We studied the mechanism of barbiturate protection from focal cerebral infarction in cats by examining in detail edema formation 72 hours after acute, permanent occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery (LMCA). Neurological function, gas exchange, vital signs, and intracranial pressure (ICP) were observed during the post-occlusion period, and infarct size and cerebral edema were measured aft...

Our attention has been called to the article "A Battle Plan in the Event of Massive Air Embolism During Open Heart Surgery" by William I. Brenner, MD, in Volume 17, Number 4 (Winter 1985) of the Journal of Extra-Corporeal Technology. Dr. Brenner is certainly to be congratulated for addressing efforts to react in what is one of the most serious accidents that can occur in and around an open hear...
